Cambridge Early Years

Welcome to Bradford Schools Cambridge Early Years Centre!

Choosing the right school for your child has become a daunting task for many parents. Given the myriads of options available, today's parents are extremely busy and especially jostling to balance the ever-increasing demands of life. Hardly is there any time to delve into the detail of what school one must choose for my child. Most parents end up making the wrong choices and these choices end up being based on convenience and affordability. It is important for parents to go beyond these factors and consider happiness, safety, cleanliness of the environment, healthy diet, playgrounds, sports and extramural curricular activities.

We welcome you to the first Cambridge Early Centre in the world, outside India. On the 15th of August 2023, Bradford Schools located in Midrand, South Africa became the first school in the world outside India to be accredited with this prestigious title. What does this mean when it comes to choosing a school for your child?

  • At Bradford Schools, we follow a holistic approach to child development, focusing on the whole child and connecting the content delivered in the classroom with development in the world and people around us. We develop knowledge understanding and skills through a spiral approach by revisiting and engaging with topics and skills in more depth at each development stage.
  • With exposure to an international curriculum, our learners meet internationally established milestones for early development. Although children develop at different paces, the teaching approach and learning styles implemented in our centres provide a monitoring mechanism and the necessary support for each child's progress.
  • The Cambridge Early Years curriculum fosters independence, empowering learners to make their own choices and build a sense of self-worth, facilitating holistic development.
  • With a low learner-teacher ratio, our learners receive personalised attention and tailored support, creating an optimal learning environment.
  • We provide nutritious meals that promote overall well-being and enhance focus during learning.
  • Our aftercare program offers a safe and engaging environment for learners beyond regular school hours, giving parents peace of mind.
  • We offer holiday care programs that keep children engaged and active during school holiday breaks, featuring fun and educational activities.

Our Cambridge Early Years' curriculum is built around 4 pillars of early childhood development namely cognitive development, physical development, language and communication development and social emotional development. These four pillars of early childhood development are broken down into 6 curriculum areas that guide and support progress across all areas of development. Each area is important as they are all connected so that teaching and learning takes place in a holistic way:

Communication, Language and Literacy

Introducing speaking, listening, reading, and writing is crucial to children's early development. We open our doors to children from all walks of life starting at 12 months, when their communication, language, and literacy skills are still in their formative stages. We embrace children from diverse backgrounds, including those from homes where English is not the first language. After all, we are all from Africa, and our role is to introduce English as the main medium of communication without undermining our children's home languages. We build confidence and competencies from as early as two years of age - we catch them young and give them a confident head start in learning.

In the Early Years classroom, learning mirrors childhood experiences at home, allowing children to feel secure while developing essential skills. Through play, children engage with books, stories, songs, and rhymes, fostering natural language development.

Exposure to picture books helps children recognise the connection between spoken words and written symbols. As they progress, they are introduced to sight vocabulary and letter sounds, learning to blend them into words. Emphasizing letter sounds over names ensures a strong foundation for reading and independent learning.

By creating a relaxed, engaging environment, we nurture confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love for literacy.

THRASS (Teaching Handwriting Reading and Spelling)

Once at Bradford, your child will begin phonics lessons where they will learn to attach a sound to a letter name and be introduced to high frequency words and the art of breaking down words into their individual forms. We teach children to break down the words into individual speech sounds and to sound the letters of the alphabet. We begin to teach them to blend sounds to make words. Once blending sounds together, your child discovers the joys of writing, and independent reading. At this stage, your roles start to change and instead of you reading for your child they start reading to you and nothing beats the sense of achievement in the child.

THRASS plays a key role towards your child’s development. We acknowledge that children can be at different stages in their reading progress and are happy to offer advice about the best ways in which you must help them. However, reading should not be a social stress, least you lose your child's natural enthusiasm for reading. Allow children to develop at their own pace with guidance. Early reading fosters independence and love of learning.

Mathematics

We recognise the importance of helping children understand how mathematics impacts everyday life. We encourage a natural grasp of numerical concepts through daily conversations, which is more beneficial to your child than simply learning to recognise number symbols or memorising numbers.

By fostering everyday interactions around numbers, children develop a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. They naturally enjoy counting familiar objects -such as footprints, stairs, or utensils - while engaging with adults, making learning an enjoyable and meaningful experience.

Our teaching approach incorporates the Singapore Maths CPA Approach (Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract), a three-step learning process that enables learners to first engage with physical objects to understand mathematical concepts in a tangible way.

Physical Development

Like ducks in water, children naturally love to play. We encourage them to develop movement skills through play, fostering a positive attitude toward exercise and laying the foundation for a healthy, active lifestyle. The development of gross motor skills (large muscle movements) and fine motor skills (small muscle control) is essential for early childhood growth.

Our state-of-the-art play areas are thoughtfully designed to support physical development. Jungle gyms, balancing beams, fireman poles, and other structured play equipment provide opportunities for children to strengthen their coordination, balance, and overall physical ability. These elements - originally designed for training - have found a greater purpose in our Early Years Centres, helping children build resilience and confidence.

A variety of extramural activities complement our spacious play areas, ensuring a well-rounded physical development experience. These activities include ball games, ballet, junior tennis, karate, and swimming, each carefully selected to engage children in fun and stimulating movement-based learning.

It is truly remarkable to watch children play and observe how they naturally develop games that involve running, jumping, and collaborative interactions. Through play, they build essential skills that extend far beyond physical activity.

We embrace children's natural ability to play, using it as a foundation for learning, growth, and well-being.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Children will only learn if they are happy and have a sense of self self-worth and it is to those qualities that we pay the greatest attention in the early years and beyond. We do this not because we believe that such an approach guarantees the best learning but also because we believe that a child's social and emotional development is of paramount importance.

At the heart of Bradford Schools's education is the pursuit of academic and curricular excellence. The quality of our teaching and the where the fictitious outside the classrooms mean that the lessons learned in the schools acquired stay with our children for life what education rest on the simultaneous pursuit of academic and co-curricular excellence.
